Tasks for Friday

  • Measure my bathroom — the smallest, inhabited space in our home
  • Record its dimensions and materiality in architectural drawings: floor plan, reflected ceiling plan and four elevations at scale 1:20. Include details of objects contained in the space as well as fittings and ceramic furniture

To experience the bathroom through smell

Keeping in mind J.D Dickson’s 9 modes of space, I focused on “smell” and the various “scents” that linger in the atmosphere of the bathroom. Using shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, hand wash, and toothpaste I have painted over the above technical drawings to express the atmospheric qualities of my bathroom during my shower time (shown below). By painting over with various body products, the sensual qualities of being in the bathroom have been directly transferred onto the sheet of paper. The aim here is to communicate my bathing experience without using traditional drawing techniques, but by developing design vocabularies that express sensorial and social implications of inhabitting intimate places.
